llms.txt
What it is: llms.txt is a simple text file served at the root of a website (for example, yoursite.com/llms.txt) following an emerging web standard. It gives AI search engines and chatbots a plain, machine-readable summary of the site — what it is, and the key pages worth reading — the same way robots.txt and sitemaps guide traditional search crawlers.
Why it matters: AI answer engines (Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity) increasingly decide what to summarize and cite. A clear llms.txt makes it easy for them to understand a site accurately and point to the right pages, instead of guessing.
Goal: make a site as discoverable and citable by AI engines as it is by Google — a clean front door for the tools that now answer searches.
