Average position
What it is: average position is the mean ranking of your page across all the searches it appeared in — position 1 is the top result, position 11 is the top of page 2. Search Console reports it per page and per query.
Why it matters: position determines clicks. The drop-off below position 3 is steep, and below position 10 (page 2) it’s drastic. Knowing exactly where each article sits tells you which ones are close enough to push up.
Goal: track position over time so you can target the articles best placed to climb into the top results.
